Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Protect workers during spill response, chemical handling, maintenance and everyday site activities with personal protective equipment selected for the actual hazard and task. Hyde Park Environmental supplies eye and face protection, safety gloves, protective clothing and ADR kit components for industrial and transport applications.

PPE is an important final layer of defence, but it should not be used as a substitute for eliminating hazards, safer processes, engineering controls or effective training. Correct selection requires more than choosing a size: consider the substance, concentration, exposure route, contact time, mechanical risk, required standard, compatibility with other equipment and the limitations stated by the manufacturer. Fit, comfort and user acceptance also influence whether protection is worn correctly.

Products should be issued with clear instructions, inspected before use, stored to prevent damage and replaced when contaminated, expired or no longer serviceable. Use your COSHH or task risk assessment and Safety Data Sheet information to define the protection required, supported by competent advice where necessary.

What is PPE?

Personal protective equipment is wearable equipment intended to reduce a person’s exposure to workplace hazards. Examples include gloves, goggles, face shields, coveralls and protective footwear. PPE must be suitable for the hazard, wearer, task and environment, and compatible items should work together without reducing protection. It is the final part of the control hierarchy, so businesses should first consider elimination, substitution, engineering controls and safe systems of work.

Types of PPE

Eye protection includes spectacles, goggles and face shields, each offering different coverage and impact or splash protection. Gloves vary by material, thickness, breakthrough time, chemical resistance and mechanical performance; no glove protects against every substance. Body protection ranges from reusable workwear to limited-use chemical garments. ADR kits combine specified equipment for vehicles carrying dangerous goods, with contents determined by the transport requirements and load. PPE selection should reference recognised product standards and the manufacturer’s data, while the complete ensemble must allow safe movement, visibility, communication and emergency removal.

PPE FAQs

Find answers to your questions about maintaining a safe and compliant workplace. From risk assessments to protective measures, learn how to protect your staff, reduce hazards, and meet safety regulations.

Use the COSHH or task risk assessment, Safety Data Sheet and chemical concentration to identify exposure routes and required performance. Check the PPE manufacturer’s compatibility data, standards and limitations, including glove breakthrough time. Confirm fit and compatibility across the complete ensemble.

Only if the manufacturer explicitly permits reuse and your assessment confirms it can be safely inspected, cleaned, decontaminated and stored. Many disposable items are intended for limited or single use. Contaminated, damaged or degraded PPE should be isolated and disposed of through the appropriate route.

Employers should provide suitable PPE, information, training, maintenance and replacement where required. Users should inspect equipment before use and report defects. More formal recorded inspections may also be needed depending on the equipment, risk and workplace system. Follow current legal duties and competent safety advice.
